Amigurumi Koala Crochet Pattern

Meet Evi, the crocheted baby koala, standing 15 cm tall. Below you’ll find the author’s step-by-step instructions for creating this adorable amigurumi koala by Ekaterina Zaitseva.


Materials Needed:

  • Main yarn (80-100 m):
  • For a beige koala: Troitskaya “Podmoskovnaya” (200 m/80 g)
  • For a gray koala: Semyonovskaya “Babushkin Nosok” (250 m/100 g)
  • Dark yarn for the nose
  • White fluffy yarn for the belly and ears (Author used Alize Softy Plus)
  • Any white regular yarn can be used instead of fluffy yarn
  • Yarn for scarf: A small amount of any color
  • Crochet hook
  • 6mm half-beads for the eyes
  • Needle and scissors
  • Hollofiber (for stuffing)

Crochet Abbreviations:

ch – chain stitch

sc – single crochet (sc)

ss – slip stitch

PSSN – half double crochet (hdc)

pr – increase (work 2 sc in one stitch)

dec – decrease (work 2 sc together)

(…)*6 times – repeat the actions in parentheses 6 times

(…) – number of stitches at the end of the row


Koala Crochet Pattern

The toy is crocheted in continuous rounds without a turning chain, unless otherwise specified.


Head:

Main color yarn:

  1. Make a chain of 6 ch. Crochet 4 sc into the chain, 3 sc into the last stitch of the chain, continue crocheting 3 sc on the other side of the chain, and finish with 1 inc in the last stitch. (12)

    • Shift the start of the row by crocheting 8 sc.

    • Shift the start of the row by crocheting 1 sc.

    • Fasten off the yarn with a slip stitch and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff the head.

Note: If you are using safety eyes, attach them around row 12, spaced 11-12 sc apart.

    • Do not stuff. Fold the edges of the ear piece and crochet 9 sc through both edges. Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Inner Ears (2 pieces):

Fluffy yarn, crocheted in turning rows:

  1. Make 4 sc into a magic ring (4)
  2. Inc*4 (8)
    • Fasten off the yarn with a slip stitch and leave a long tail for sewing.

Note: If the inner ear isn’t big enough, crochet another round with 4 increases evenly distributed.


Nose:

Additional color yarn:

  1. Make a chain of 5 ch, crochet 3 sc along the chain, 3 sc in the last stitch of the chain, and continue crocheting 2 sc on the other side of the chain, finishing with 1 inc in the last stitch. (10)

    Note: When crocheting the increases from hdc, the lower part of the nose becomes a bit wider than the upper part.

    • Fasten off the yarn with a slip stitch and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff as you sew it to the head.

Legs (2 pieces):

    • Shift the start of the row by crocheting 2 sc. Stuff the lower part of the arm.
    • Fold the edges of the piece and crochet 5 sc through both edges.
    • Fasten off the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

When sewing the arms to the body, position them so that the increases from rows 7 and 9 are facing backwards.


Tail:

    • Fasten off the yarn with a slip stitch, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff as you sew it to the body.

Belly:

    • Fasten off the yarn with a slip stitch, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Note: If you feel the belly isn’t big enough, crochet one more round, evenly distributing 6 increases.


Scarf:

  1. Make a chain of 9 ch, starting from the second stitch from the hook, crochet 8 sc.
  2. Crochet a turning chain, turn your work.
  3. In the next round, crochet 8 sc through the back loop of the previous round’s stitches.
  4. Repeat until the scarf reaches the desired length (approximately 25 rounds for the author’s version).
  5. Fold the ends of the scarf and crochet 8 sc through both edges.

Final Touches:

  • Attach the safety eyes (or sew on regular eyes), embroider the mouth and eyebrows.
  • When publishing pictures of your finished Evi koala, be sure to credit the author!
