Free Crochet Masterclass Plush Dragon

Free Crochet Masterclass: Plush Dragon by @babуvik_toys

In this masterclass, you will learn how to crochet a plush dragon amigurumi using soft yarn. The recommended yarn for this project is Himalaya Dolphin Baby, or any similar plush yarn. The dragon features two main colors – the designer suggests green shades, but you can choose any colors you prefer. All parts are crocheted in a spiral, except for the belly, which is done in turning rows. The legs and tail are crocheted as you work on the body. The crest is crocheted directly onto the dragon’s head.

Size:
The finished toy will be approximately 25–30 cm tall.

Instructions: Plush Dragon Crochet

Front Legs (2 parts)

For the arms, use Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn (color 80360). As you crochet, do not forget to stuff the arm (I stuff the arm slightly more than half full, leaving some room to ensure the arms don’t stick out too much on the finished piece).

Steps:

  1. 6 sc in a magic ring
  2. 6 inc (12)
    3-4. 12 sc
  3. 3 dec, 6 sc (9)
    6-12. 9 sc

Fold the detail in half and crochet 4 sc through both sides. Cut the yarn to a length of 10 cm, secure, and hide it in the leg.

Back Legs (2 parts)

For the feet, use Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn (color 80360 for the main body and 80359 for the sole). Do not forget to stuff the leg (I stuff the leg slightly more than half full, leaving room for a firm, stable shape).

Steps:

  1. 6 sc
  2. 6 inc (12)
  3. (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Switch to the main color (80360):
  4. 18 sc in the back loops only
  5. 18 sc
  6. (1 sc, dec) x 3, 9 sc (15)
  7. (1 sc, dec) x 3, 6 sc (12)
    8-12. 12 sc
  8. Crochet 11 sc, fold the detail in half and crochet 6 sc through both sides. Cut the yarn to a length of 10 cm, secure, and hide it in the leg.

Head

For the head, I used Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn (color 80360) and 12 mm eyes. Place the eyes in row 5 (one eye between the first and second increase stitches, the other between the fifth and sixth increases).

Steps:

  1. 7 ch
  2. From the second stitch, crochet: inc, 4 sc, 3 sc in the last stitch, then 5 sc on the other side (14)
  3. 2 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc, 6 sc (18)
  4. 18 sc
  5. 4 sc, 6 inc, 8 sc (24)
  6. 4 sc, (1 sc, inc) x 6, 8 sc (30)
  7. (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36)
    8-12. 36 sc
  8. (4 sc, dec) x 6 (30)
  9. (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)
  10. (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)
  11. (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)
  12. 6 dec (6)

Cut the yarn to 10-15 cm, secure, and close the hole by pulling the remaining yarn through.

Tail

For the tail, I used Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn (color 80360).

Steps:

  1. 6 sc in a magic ring
  2. 6 sc
  3. (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9)
  4. (inc, 2 sc) x 3 (12)
  5. (3 sc, inc) x 3 (15)
  6. 2 sc, inc, (4 sc, inc) x 2, 2 sc (18)
    7-9. 10 sc, 8 ss (18)
  7. 13 sc, 2 inc, 3 sc (20)
    11-12. 10 sc, 10 ss (20)

Slip stitch, cut the yarn to 10-15 cm, and secure it (leave some yarn in case you need it later).

Belly

For the belly, I used Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn (color 80359). This part is crocheted in turning rows.

Steps:

  1. 3 ch. From the second stitch, crochet 2 sc
    2-3. ch, 2 sc
  2. ch, 2 inc (4)
  3. ch, inc, 2 sc, inc (6)
  4. ch, inc, 4 sc, inc (8)
    7-8. ch, 8 sc
  5. ch, dec, 4 sc, dec (6)
  6. ch, dec, 2 sc, dec (4)
  7. ch, 2 dec (2)

Finish by slip stitching and crocheting around the edge with sc.

Body

For the body, I used Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn (color 80360). I recommend stuffing the tail while crocheting the body but leave it unstuffed until later for ease of stitching.

Steps:

  1. 6 sc in a magic ring
  2. 6 inc (12)
  3. (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)
  4. (1 sc, inc) x 9 (27)
  5. (2 sc, inc) x 9 (36)
  6. 6 sc with a leg, 12 sc, 6 sc with the other leg, 1 sc, 10 sc with the tail (10 tail stitches crocheted as ss), 1 sc (36)
  7. 25 sc, 10 sc with the tail (tail stitched into the last 10 sc), 1 sc (36)
  8. 36 sc
  9. (2 sc, dec) x 9 (27)
  10. 27 sc
  11. (1 sc, dec) x 9 (18)
    12-13. 18 sc
  12. (4 sc, dec) x 3 (15)
  13. 1 sc, 4 sc with a leg, 3 sc, 4 sc with a leg, 3 sc, ss

Cut the yarn to 20-30 cm and secure it. Leave the remaining yarn to attach the head to the body.

Finishing Touches

  • Attach the head to the body.
  • Create shaping for the face.
  • Embroider the eyes, eyelids, eyebrows, and nostrils.
  • Attach the crest to the head.
  • Attach the ears.
  • Optionally, you can add wings, crochet a sweater, or other accessories.
